NB Not the usual Officer Start Point

Yes - you read correctly this is the 25th anniversary of annual autumn alpine run which started life as the “Autumn Ice Run in May 1998.

After experimenting with a traditional run in May 2021 (which was fun but ….), I decided to try and make it safer and give us more daylight by going at the end of March and before school holidays – Easter  etc.

Ride over Victoria's highest sealed road (Mt Hotham) cross the Tawonga Gap and stay overnight at Tawonga near Mt Beauty.

While keeping things very simple and traditional,

I intend to vary the route a bit this year and head south of the highway to Sale for the morning refreshment stop.
I have also discovered some quite interesting sealed side roads between Bruthen and Omeo so I plan on using those to avoid some of the bumps and roadworks presently on the Great Alpine Road.

Everyone to arrange their own accommodation.
I have booked accommodation at Mountain Creek Motel, Tawonga and plan to dine at their restaurant on the Saturday night.  They even have a drying room!
They have a fully licensed restaurant on site
Please contact them direct and mention the Ulysses Booking for a better rate than advertised.

I strongly recommend you ring and speak to them in person to arrange a room for your group

Phone numbers are:   +61 3 5754 4247 | 0447 779 350 and their email is  info@mountaincreekmotel.com.au
They have rooms which can accommodate up to 4 people in separate beds  -
Return route planned via Myrtleford, Whitfield & Mansfield

Comments

I sent an email out to many members and quite a few preferred a midweek option, but there were also quite a few who would only have been able to attend on a weekend.
So to keep up a tradition I have plummetted on the weekend ride for this year and added a few route variations to mix things up.
We (any one of us) can still arrange the odd mid week overnighter as we please.
Again, thank for all the responses I received

  • Several people have decided to join the ride at Bruthen at noon on the Saturday over the past few years to cut down ride length on day one and this remains an option.  Please let me know if you decide to do this.
  • The ride from Bruthen to Omeo will be more "formal" this year as I will vary the roads we use quite a bit and therefore need corner markers etc,
  • If you live in the north west of the State it is still open to make your own way to Tawonga and socialise with us on the Saturday night and even enjoy part of the return ride on Sunday

Whatever you decide, please let me know if you're coming and where you're meeting us.

  • The only meal planned is the dinner on Saturday night at the Mountain Creek Motel and you order and pay for your own meals
  • They do not do breakfasts so a "breakfast stop" is planned for Myrtleford
  • The longest "run" will be the first leg on Saturday morning from the Outbound servo at Officer to Sale which is a bit under 200 km via places such as Driffield and Loy Yang.  I may throw in a 5 minute rest stop just to be safe.  I intend to stop beside Lake Guthrie, Sale
  • img_20230123_134206631_0.jpg
  • for a proper refreshment break.  Coffee and fuel can be bought nearby
  • I then intend to "bypass" Bairnsdale by coming in along the Mitchell River and continue on to Bruthen for a fuel and lunch stop.
  • From there some side roads on the way to Omeo and then on over Hotham & Tawonga Gap to Mount Beauty (supplies available) and Tawonga
  • Plenty of fuel options at Myrtleford which is 60 km from our overnight stay.  Filling up at Mount Beauty on Saturday afternoon is also an option.

This is just a reminder to let me now if you're coming
I already have quite a good number of confirmations plus some "whispers" indicating attendance but no firm confirmation from some who regularly attend
It is only a few weeks away but I'd really like things firmed up over the next weeks or so. enlightened

Thanks to John Cook for another compelling ride....  Great roads and great fun!!  Appreciation....
