President’s Report November 2010
It has certainly been a busy year. We managed to organise a branch ride almost every weekend of the year thanks to the willingness of members to step up and lead rides. I would like to thank all those members who made the commitment and led rides this year. Your efforts are appreciated by all who participate in rides including many visitors from other branches.
The High Country Odyssey was a great success again thanks to the participation of all who attended. I would like to point out that the entire branch committee did attend and helped in making things happen. There are many people that I could name but in particular I would like to thank Margaret Taylor. She took on the registration duties and many additional behind the scenes tasks such as printing, liaising with suppliers, caterers, venue issues and the entertainer to name a few and also went up early to physically do the shopping. Margaret - Thank you for making it happen.
The VSK day was also a great success and the weather gods smiled on us after a rather dismal Saturday. Many thanks to Perry for instigating and organising this event and to Anita, Bonnie (Marg T’s daughter), Calvin, Greg, Hank, John T, Julie, Margaret and Rae for both organising and the hands on deeds in making it all happen. Thanks also to Santa, the Three Wheelers Group, Ulysses members who attended and took kids for rides, DJ Andrew plus Lisa and Steve from the VSK organisation. You all ensured that these special kids had a great day and my apologies to anyone I missed.
The Australian Motorcycle Expo will run from the 26th to the 28th November 2010 in Melbourne and the Melbourne Branch will be setting up a display at the venue. If you can help out manning the stand at some stage during the event please contact Perry.
The Christmas function has again been booked at the Donvale Sports Club in Noonan way for the evening of Saturday 11th December from 7.00 PM for only $30 per person with drinks available at bar prices. It would be very much appreciated if bookings and payments were made well in advance to assist with catering and planning. Come along and enjoy the camaraderie during a great night out.
Bob Tate will again be leading the first ride of the year which is becoming somewhat of a tradition for him. Bob Harris has organised an overnight ride to Omeo in January and Ron Blomley is again running Swanpool Revisited the week before the Branch AGM
The Melbourne Branch AGM will be held on 20 February 2011 at Donvale.
I would urge members to consider nominating for a position on the committee to ensure the continued health of this great branch of the Ulysses Club.
Events such as the High Country Odyssey will definitely need some new people to commit to the organisation if they are to continue beyond next year.
Our secretary – Perry has now been appointed to the National Committee and will be standing down from the Melbourne Branch Committee. Margaret Taylor has indicated that she wishes to retire from the treasurer’s position and another committee member will definitely be standing down.
So we definitely need a new secretary, a new treasurer and several committee members including someone to take on the role of organising events such as the Odyssey and VSK Day.
Those events cannot continue to be organised by the same few people (and I claim no credit for the work of others) who have done a sterling job, so some fresh input is needed.
Our new website actually went on line back in July and things are still evolving as members’ needs are identified. The number of registered users on the website is growing steadily and large numbers of visitors are accessing the site. Some members have become confident and active in adding content such as blogs, photos and stories and I have received very good feedback from members and others who have visited the site. I would encourage members to register on the site to maximise communication opportunities between members. I would again like to thank Kate for all the great work she has been doing in setting this all up.
Saffron Road Motor Cycle Tours have become a sponsor and advertised some specials on the website. I sent out an email of their latest specials to all the members I have on my email list.
The proprietors of our other sponsors; Bike Mart, Jeffrey Motor Cycle Centre, Metro Motor Cycles plus Treads and Things have been invited to attend the president’s BBQ ride on the 5th December. These sponsors have also assisted with raffle prizes for the High Country Odyssey and the profits there from assisted in funding VSK Day.
I would encourage members to consider supporting these businesses when looking for apparel, a motor bike, servicing, tyres and accessories or even that exotic trip. You may well be pleasantly surprised with a discount if you mention your membership and their sponsorship.
We also look like adding one additional sponsor in the very near future.
Now would be a good time to volunteer to lead a ride in early autumn whilst there is a probability of good weather and so that I can fill the calendar to the end of March before the next Spare Tyre gets issued.
We are also in discussion with the Ulysses Alpine Riders Group exploring the possibility of having an overnight ride in Bright Porepunkah area either in March or early April.
When riding - Stay safe and consider others. Courtesy and road craft go a long way.
Keep yourselves, your licences and your bikes intact.
