President’s Report August 2012

Social and Future Events

The monthly Friday night social and the Saturday morning meetings continue to provide camaraderie opportunities for members.   Spring is arriving and the rally and event season is going into full swing.

The new Melbourne Branch Odyssey at Nagambie from 12 to 14 October is now less than two months away so hurry up and get your registrations in.

Details for the Christmas function (including registration form), VSK Day and numerous other events are also detailed on the website and in the Spare Tyre

Rides and Participation

I wish to thank our ride coordinator, Holly for all the effort she has put into filling the ride calendar for this year and all the people (including several first time ride leaders) who have accepted the challenge and volunteered to lead rides.   Weatherwise, it has been a rather miserable winter and you have all done a great job keeping our calendar so full.  If you are a regular rider and haven’t already done so, please do give consideration to leading a ride soon.

Sponsors and Branch Finances

I would also like to remind members of our sponsors who fund the circulation of The Spare Tyre and the cost of running the website.  These sponsors greatly assist the finances of the branch and I do encourage you to support them when it comes to bikes, servicing, accessories and clothing.  We have a brand new sponsor in Andy Strapz plus our long term sponsors Bike Mart, Jeffrey Motorcycles, Metro Motorcycles plus Treads and Things.     The support of these sponsors has enabled us to fund things such as VSK Day in particular plus fund the web site costs and other events and still keep branch funds in a very healthy state.

Committee Continuity

The branch can only continue to provide for the enjoyment of members by having an active and constantly evolving committee.  I am willing to stand again next year for a final year as president if necessary, but we really do need some fresh members to step up to the plate to ensure the continued health and vitality of the branch.   Peter rejoined to help out as treasurer again two years ago and Samuel has indicated a willingness to take on that role as Peter steps down this year.   We would really like to see a number of members nominate to join the committee and take on the task of running branch related social events and bring in some fresh views.  If you think you have some skills that can help the continuity of this great branch and club please do step up and get involved.

Participation

The branch, website and Spare Tyre exist to enhance your enjoyment of your membership of the Ulysses Club.  For example most members are capable of taking photos on rides and other interesting events and posting them on the website and contributing to the content of the Spare Tyre.   I enjoy doing it, I encourage others to try also and it has been great to see contributions from an increasing number of members, including newer members.   Similarly for those who regularly participate in rides, consider leading a ride, doing a ride report or taking on tail end duties.

In the mean time, enjoy the coming warmer months and the many events which the branch and club put on for your enjoyment.

I remind everyone that safety is the responsibility of each and every individual who participates in rides and events and unsafe practices will not be tolerated.  Exercise courtesy and consideration to all road users to make sure we all get home safely with ourselves, our licences and bikes intact and enjoy our participation to the maximum.

Finally, I would like to say, “When riding, practise road craft, courtesy and consideration for others so that we can continue to enjoy our motorcycling safely.”
