Great Alpine Road Conditions

I drove up the Great Alpine Road from Bruthen to Swifts Creek and beyond today.
The road surface is far from ideal at the moment.
Los of patchwork, raised sections and road sinking plus some failed repairs.
It's manageable, but be aware and don't ride too close together

More about the Great Alpine Road

Road deterioration was evident all the way up to Mt Hotham from Bruthen but still being enjoyed by other motorcyclists.
Happily a local showed me some more interesting roads between Bruthen and Omeo to explore in the not too distant future

Still more on the Great Alpine Road

If one side is worse than the other, I'd say it is the southbound side which seems to have more "subsidence" spots probably due to heavy quarry trucks (from Benambra) and log trucks breaking through surface after the heavy rains we experienced.   However there are bad spots in both directions

  • I was asked by a member if the 40 KPH rough road signs were revenue raising.
  • I'd say "No".
  • A nuisance yes, but if you encounter a large hole or dip and can't swerve because of an oncoming truck or similar, then it really does make sense not to be doing 100 KPH.

The road is still quite rideable and enjoyable but exercising due care is the way to make it both enjoyable and memorable for the right reasons.  As I like to say, "Don't ride faster than you can see"
